What is Allergan?
Allergan is the name familiar to Thai people for BOTOX®, whose active substance is Botulinum Toxin Type A, or the product-specific name onabotulinumtoxinA.
The medicine acts at the junction between nerves and muscles, temporarily reducing signals that stimulate muscle contraction.
It is used for concerns related to muscle activity, such as expression lines, or in plans to adjust muscles in certain facial areas.
BOTOX Cosmetic describes its mechanism as temporarily reducing activity of muscles that cause lines when frowning, smiling or raising the eyebrows. BOTOX®
The product registered in Thailand is 100 Units / vial, manufactured by Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland, Ireland. The current Thai licence holder is AbbVie Pharmaceuticals (Thailand) Ltd., registration number 1C 21/55(NB), and the registration remains active in the Thai FDA database. National Drug Information
Which strain does Allergan use?
BOTOX Cosmetic produces Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A from Clostridium botulinum Hall strain.
It undergoes culture and purification to obtain the Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A Complex used in the product.
The BOTOX Cosmetic Product Monograph explicitly identifies the Hall strain. Allergan Media
For actual injections, the strain alone does not determine results. They also depend on sites, unit count, technique and each person’s muscles.
Can Allergan units be compared with other botulinum toxin brands?
They should not be compared 1:1.
BOTOX prescribing information clearly states that units of different Botulinum Toxin brands cannot be directly compared with or converted into units of another product.
Each product has its own manufacturing method and Biological Potency measurement system. Allergan Media
Therefore:
50 Units of one brand ≠ 50 Units of another brand automatically.
The doctor must calculate based on the actual product used.
What ingredients does Allergan contain?
For the 100 Units size:
Contains:
- Botulinum Toxin Type A — 100 Units
- Human Albumin — 0.5 mg
- Sodium Chloride — 0.9 mg
It comes as Sterile Powder, with no preservative in the vial. DailyMed
What can Allergan help with?
In aesthetic use, Botulinum Toxin suits concerns related to muscles.
At The Ality, the main programmes can be divided into:
Botox for wrinkles
For lines caused by facial expressions, such as:
- Forehead
- Between the eyebrows
- Outer eye corners
As muscle activity in the area decreases, lines caused by skin folding look softer.
Masseter Botox
Suitable for people whose jaw area looks broad because of the Masseter muscle.
Reducing muscle activity here can gradually reduce muscle size over time and help the lower face look less bulky.
If facial width comes from bone or fat, masseter Botox does not directly address that cause.
Botox Lift
Planned for certain muscles around the jawline and neck to help reduce downward muscle pull.
Its goal differs from masseter Botox, which focuses on reducing Masseter size.
Results and unit count depend on each person’s muscles and facial structure.
Botulinum Toxin indications differ by country and area. Masseter use or Facial Lifting techniques should follow the product indications and the doctor’s assessment.
When do Allergan results appear?
For forehead, between-brow and outer-eye wrinkles, BOTOX Cosmetic information states:
Changes may begin to appear at around 1–2 days.
Results gradually become clearer. In the brand’s study information, full results are assessed at around 30 days. BOTOX®
This does not mean you must wait 30 days to see results. Most people may feel reduced muscle activity earlier; results can simply continue to change.
Does masseter Botox take longer than wrinkle treatment?
By nature, muscle activity decreases before muscle size decreases.
With Botox for wrinkles, reduced movement may be felt first. Masseter treatment requires time for the Masseter to gradually shrink, so facial shape is not assessed in the first 1–2 days as with wrinkles.
How long does Allergan last?
For BOTOX Cosmetic in the following areas:
- Forehead
- Between the eyebrows
- Outer eye corners
Official information states that results can last up to around 4 months. BOTOX®
Actual duration varies by person, depending on:
- Muscle size and strength
- Unit count
- Injection sites
- The body's response
- Treated area
For masseter Botox, “up to 4 months” from facial-wrinkle information should not be used as a fixed figure: the goal is a change in muscle size rather than merely reducing wrinkle movement.
How many units of Allergan are needed?
There is no single unit count for everyone.
Consider:
- Area
- Muscle strength
- Face shape
- Symmetry
- Desired result
- Results from the previous injections
For example, someone with clearly enlarged masseter muscles and someone with only slight masseter prominence do not necessarily need the same amount.
Units should be planned around the actual muscles rather than choosing by the package unit count alone.
Does Allergan make the face tight or frozen?
Botulinum Toxin does not necessarily make the face “frozen.”
The goal is to reduce muscle activity to a degree appropriate for the area.
An excessive amount or unsuitable placement may affect movement and expression.
The doctor must assess both muscles and facial expressions before planning units.
How does Allergan differ from Korean botulinum toxin?
The basic mechanism is the same as Botulinum Toxin Type A, but products differ in:
- Manufacturing process
- Formulation
- Potency measurement method
- Product units
- Protein Complex
- Clinical study data
- Registration and indications
Do not judge one brand as “stronger” or “less likely to cause resistance” from the manufacturing country alone.
For Allergan, clear information includes BOTOX Cosmetic’s long history of aesthetic research and use, and its product units being specific to BOTOX itself. BOTOX®
Is Allergan FDA approved?
BOTOX Cosmetic is approved by the US FDA.
Current aesthetic indications in the US include improving the appearance of:
- Frown Lines
- Crow’s Feet
- Forehead Lines
- Vertical Platysma Bands around the neck and jawline
In adults according to the specified indications. BOTOX®
However, a Thai website should clearly distinguish:
US FDA Approval ≠ approval for every treatment area in Thailand.
For Thailand, the Thai drug registration should be the primary reference.
Does Allergan have Thai FDA registration?
Yes.
The Thai FDA drug database lists:
